After acne lesions have healed, it is normal for red or brown marks to remain on the skin for a period of time. In most cases, these marks will disappear naturally within a few weeks or months. In some people, however, acne can result in long-lasting scars on their skin. Fortunately, there are treatments available to help reduce the appearance of acne scars. At Marina Dermatology, we offer several solutions to acne sufferers in the Marina Del Rey area. If you suffer from active acne outbreaks or wish to treat scarring from previous lesions, our Board Certified Dermatologist can suggest an effective treatment for you.
Acne scars form as a result of the skin’s inflammatory response to acne. This inflammatory response causes collagen damage in the scar area, resulting in a depression in the skin. Acne scars can appear in a variety of forms on the skin. They may be deep and narrow or they may cause a rolling or puckering of the skin. In darker skinned patients, hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) may occur in the scarred area, while patients with lighter skin often experience erythema (a reddening of the skin) within the scars.
When you meet with our dermatologist, he will examine your skin and ask about the development of your scars. If the scars are newer, he may recommend that you apply certain topical ointments or simply wait a few weeks or months to see if the scar improves on its own. He will recommend that you protect your skin from sun exposure, as the ultraviolet rays of the sun can cause the scars to darken or redden and slow the skin’s healing progress. If our Board Certified Dermatologist believes that the scar will not resolve naturally, then he will recommend a course of treatment. Before beginning any treatment, active acne breakouts need to be under control. Our Los Angeles skin care team can also help you find a solution to effectively manage acne, if needed.
We offer a number of treatments to improve the appearance of acne scars, all of which can be performed at one of our offices near Marina Del Rey. Based upon the scar(s) being treated, our skin Doctor may recommend one of the following treatments:
- Microdermabrasion: This treatment gently removes the surface layers of the skin. The body responds to this by creating a new, smoother layer of skin to replace the removed skin. Healing times after microdermabrasion range from one to three weeks.
- Fraxel/Laser Resurfacing: During this procedure, the top layer of skin is removed and the middle layer of the skin is tightened. The combination of these two effects results in smoother, rejuvenated skin and a reduction of acne scars. It can take anywhere from four to 10 days for your skin to heal after laser resurfacing. There are a variety of different lasers that can be used. Our Board Certified Dermatologist will recommend the laser that will provide you with the best results.
- Dermal Fillers: Dermal fillers are able lift up indentations in the skin that occur as a result of deeper acne scaring. Dermal fillers are very effective and involve no downtime afterwards, but the treatment must be repeated every four to six months to maintain results.
