BOTOX® for Sweating

Sweating is our body’s way of regulating and maintaining its healthy temperature. There are varying levels of “normal” sweating among people, but some people seem to sweat quite a bit more than others. When a doctor determines that a person’s level of sweating has become excessive, hyperhidrosis may be diagnosed. Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for sweating that is beyond what is required by the body to maintain its temperature. While excessive sweating isn’t necessarily unhealthy, it can be quite distressing and may cause strong feelings of embarrassment. In some cases, patients develop anxiety about appearing in public or in certain situations where sweating may be unusual. If you feel that you sweat more than those around around you, we encourage you to make an appointment with our Marina Del Rey Doctor’s.

At Marina Dermatology, we have found BOTOX® to be an effective treatment for hyperhidrosis. Many of us have heard about BOTOX® as a wrinkle reduction treatment, but fewer people know about it within the context of hyperhidrosis. The treatment works by altering the interactions between the nerve endings and sweat glands in the skin. When BOTOX® is injected near sweat glands, the body stops sending the signal to sweat, thereby decreasing moisture in the treated area. Clinical studies have proven that BOTOX® is a safe and effective way to reduce underarm sweat for up to two years. While the underarm area is the most frequently treated for hyperhidrosis, BOTOX® can also be used on the hands, feet, and forehead to decrease sweat production. Because the body has hundreds of sweat glands, preventing sweat in a few small areas does not cause any negative physical effect.

The BOTOX® procedure for hyperhidrosis takes about 15 minutes to perform and can be performed at either of our Los Angeles locations. Before beginning the procedure, our Doctor will review your medical history and assess your needs to determine where to inject BOTOX® and how many injections are required. If necessary, our skin Doctor may first apply a local anesthetic to the treatment area. He will then inject BOTOX® into the armpit using a very fine needle. On average, about 15 injections are administered during a hyperhidrosis treatment session. It usually takes at least a few days for the treatment to begin working. After it starts working, most people experience about an 80% decrease in sweat production in the treated area, which typically lasts for about seven months. At Marina Dermatology, most of our patients undergo bi-yearly BOTOX® injects for complete management and control of hyperhidrosis.
