The introduction of the Fraxel® Laser was one of the most important and revolutionary breakthroughs in laser resurfacing treatments. This advanced laser system offers extremely effective skin rejuvenating effects without the lengthy recovery period and complications associated with older laser systems. Fraxel is able to treat specific areas of concern, such as acne scars and wrinkles, while improving the overall tone and texture of the skin. As such, Fraxel skin resurfacing is rapidly gaining popularity throughout the Los Angeles region. Many of our Marina Del Rey patients have undergone Fraxel skin resurfacing with our Cosmetic Dermatologist and are sharing the great results with their friends.
As we age, our skin undergoes a number of changes. Skin may become less firm and elastic, the texture can appear rougher and less youthful, and skin tone may become increasingly uneven. The year-round exposure to sun in LA can provoke pigmentation changes, resulting in the appearance of more and more sun or age spots each year. Fraxel is able to combat all these effects of aging at once. The unique system utilizes two different wavelengths of light: one is used to spot treat problem areas such as deeper wrinkles and acne scars, while the other is used to provide overall rejuvenation effects, including improved skin texture, tone, and elasticity.
Fraxel leverages a unique fractional technology to treat damaged skin. The laser treats only a small part (a “fraction”) of the skin at a time, leaving the surrounding tissue untouched to promote and encourage rapid healing. During a treatment, the laser will create thousands of microscopic holes deep within the skin. These microscopic wounds trigger the body’s healing response. As the damaged tissue is replaced by new, healthy tissue, the skin will appear noticeably younger and more attractive.
We offer Fraxel treatments at both of our Marina Dermatology offices. During your initial consultation, our skin Doctor will determine the best treatment plan for you based upon your goals and skin type. Most of our LA patients require three to five sessions, spaced at two to four week intervals. Fraxel skin resurfacing is performed using a topical anesthetic, which will be applied to your skin one hour before the laser is used. It typically takes about 25 minutes to treat the entire face, during which time our Doctor will monitor your comfort. After the treatment, your skin may feel sunburned for about an hour and you may experience some mild discomfort. With the use of makeup, most patients feel comfortable resuming normal activities the same day as their treatment. The skin will appear pinkish for five to seven days, indicating that the treatment has stimulated the body’s normal healing response. Some patients experience swelling, which typically resolves within two to three days. For the following two weeks, you may observe a bronzing effect and your skin will flake, similar to the flaking that occurs after sunburn. This is not usually painful and moisturizers can minimize the appearance of flaking. After a few weeks, you will see the initial results of your treatment as new skin is revealed. The full results are typically revealed about two to three months later, after collagen production as increased and firmer, more youthful skin is revealed.
