Photodynamic Acne Therapy

Acne is a very common skin condition that can have short-term and long-term consequences. While it is incredibly prevalent during the teenage years, some people continue to suffer from acne into their 20’s and 30’s. Acne can cause embarrassment and self-consciousness to teenagers and adults alike. Furthermore, severe acne can result in permanent skin scarring. As such, our Cosmetic Dermatologist recommends that acne sufferers seek help in treating and managing acne. At Marina Dermatology, we offer a wide range of treatments to help you control acne. One treatment option is photodynamic acne therapy, a form of light therapy that can provide effective results without serious or long-term side effects.

Photodynamic acne therapy is one of the more recent and advanced forms of acne treatment available to patients in the Marina Del Rey and Los Angeles area. Unlike other treatments, there are no messy creams that can cause skin irritation or strong medications that require blood testing and medical supervision. Photodynamic acne therapy causes several changes in the skin that can help reduce active lesions and prevent future breakouts. Photodynamic therapy destroys P. acnes, the bacteria that live in the skin and cause acne. It also helps to reduce pore size, making it more difficult for oil, dirt, and dead skin to accumulate in the pores and cause outbreaks. Lastly, it is thought to cause a reduction in oil production, which reduces the amount of oil that is can enter the pores and provoke outbreaks.

The procedure itself is easy and causes little to no pain and discomfort. For photodynamic acne therapy to result in an overall improvement and control future outbreaks, several treatment sessions are usually needed. Most patients see the most effective results when they undergo a series of eight treatments over four weeks, although some patients require only two or three sessions. We are able to perform the treatment at either of our LA offices. When you arrive, our Doctor will apply a solution called Levulan to your skin, which will be left to soak in for 45 to 60 minutes. After this, you will sit in front of a device that emits a blue light onto your skin for about 15 minutes. The specific wavelength of light used activates the Levulan so that it can target the sebaceous glands that cause acne. Although most patients do not experience any pain, our skin Doctor will monitor your comfort throughout the treatment. After the treatment, you will be able to resume normal activities immediately. Patients must avoid exposure to the sun for a few days because the treatment makes the skin more sensitive to UV exposure. Some patients experience redness and mild peeling for one or two days after the treatment, but other patients experience no side effects at all.
