Sculptra® Aesthetic is a cosmetic treatment that minimizes facial wrinkles by restoring the skin’s underlying structure in the targeted area. Sculptra Aesthetic differs from other facial injectables because it works by stimulating the production of collagen to improve the condition of the skin and minimize facial wrinkles. Sculptra is a unique treatment that utilizes the power of your body to produce natural, long lasting results. Our skin Doctor recommends this treatment to appropriate candidates who seek longer-term results from their injectable cosmetic treatment.
In order to understand how Sculptra works, our Cosmetic Dermatologist believes it is important to understand how the aging process affects the skin. Our skin contains a number of substances that are responsible for its firmness and elasticity. One of these substances is collagen. Responsible for our skin’s firmness and elasticity, collagen is abundant in the skin during our younger years. With age, collagen production decreases, causing accelerated skin laxity (looseness) that contributes to the formation of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging. A number of cosmetic treatments on the market today, including Sculptra Aesthetic, work by stimulating the production of collagen beneath the skin. The results of collagen-stimulating treatments will not be immediately apparent – in this way, Sculptra differs from dermal fillers, which immediately replace lost volume to produce a noticeable effect. With Sculptra, the results are revealed over the coming months as the body increases its collagen production in response to the treatment.
Sculptra is typically used to treat signs of aging around the nose, mouth, and chin. This includes nasolabial folds (“smile lines” that form between the corners of the nose and corners of the mouth), marionette lines (the brackets that can form at the edge of the lips), and wrinkles on and around the chin. The active ingredient in Sculptra is a synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid. This substance has been used in medicine for several decades in dissolvable sutures. It does not human, animal, or bacterial components, nor does it require allergy testing before use. After the injection, poly-L-lactic acid will be gradually absorbed by the body as it stimulates the production of collagen in the treatment area.
A Sculptra Aesthetic treatment consists of three or four sessions spaced about three weeks apart. The treatment can be performed by our dermatologist at either of our Los Angeles locations and requires no downtime afterwards. The treatment will be performed using a very fine needle to inject the solution beneath the skin in the targeted area. Most of our Marina Del Rey patients do not find the injections to be painful – our Doctor strives to provide maximum patient comfort during any treatment he provides at Marina Dermatology. Some patients experience redness and tenderness around the site of the injection, but this should dissipate after a short period of time. A less common side effect is the formation of small bumps beneath the surface of the skin. Before performing Sculptra, our Doctor will review your medical history and ask if you have a history of keloid scarring to reduce the risk of complications. To avoid the risk of side effects and ensure an optimal result, only an experienced and qualified doctor should provide Sculptra Aesthetic treatments.
Sculptra provides long last results that begin to be apparent after about two months. After completing the full Sculptra treatment, you will experience the results for at least two years, far longer than the results of dermal fillers typically last.
