Patients in the Marina Del Rey area who are unhappy about the appearance of stretch marks on their skin often consult with our Los Angeles Cosmetic Dermatologist about treatment options. At Marina Dermatology, we offer a number of different stretch mark treatments to suit our patients’ varying needs. Our Cosmetic Dermatologist is highly experienced at treating all types of scars, including stretch marks, and can recommend a treatment type to improve the appearance of your skin.
Stretch marks are a type of skin scarring that usually occurs due to rapid stretching of the skin, which can cause the dermis (middle layer of the skin) to tear. Stretch marks typically form during periods of rapid growth and weight gain. Stretch marks also seem to form in association with hormonal changes, making them more likely to occur in association with the bodily changes that occur during adolescence and pregnancy. When stretch marks first form, they will appear as purple or red-colored marks on the skin. Eventually, their color will lighten and fade, but they will never disappear completely. Stretch marks tend to appear on the abdomen, breasts, lower back, thighs, hips, buttocks, and arms. Although stretch marks are not associated with any health problems, they can be quite dramatic and cause feelings of self-consciousness, leading many patients to consult with our Dermatologist about treatments to correct their stretch marks.
At Marina Dermatology, many of the treatments we offer can safely and effectively improve the appearance of stretch marks. Based upon your skin type and extent of scarring, our Doctor may recommend one of the following treatments:
- Laser therapy: We offer two types of laser treatments to improve the appearance of stretch marks on the skin. The Vbeam Perfecta laser can be used to break up the red pigmentation in stretch marks to lighten them so they are less visible. It typically takes two to five treatment sessions performed at monthly intervals to treat stretch mark scarring with Vbeam Perfecta. Another treatment option that has proven extremely effective is fractional laser resurfacing performed with the Fraxel® Repair Laser. This treatment creates microscopic wounds in the skin that stimulate the body to produce new collagen and skin cells. A 2007 clinical trial showed that stretch marks could be improved by as much as 75% after five to six treatment sessions.
- Dermabrasion: During a dermabrasian treatment, our Dermatologist will remove the top layer of the skin using specialized tools. The body responds by creating new, fresh skin that will be significantly improved in terms of stretch mark scarring.
- Topical medication: In certain patients, prescription retinoids may be used to improve the appearance of stretch marks.
